Why Do I Find This CBS Story Less Than Credible?

Hatched by Dafydd

Right. So I'm reading this CBS story that I Drudged up, and it's telling me that they've outed "Curve Ball." Curve Ball -- sez them -- fabricated a bunch of stories that "drove the U.S. argument for invading Iraq." Why, if it weren't for Curve Ball, that war-criminal Bush would never have been able to lie us into that war, which (according to the Squeaker of the House) is an utter failure!

And I run across this sentence:

More than a hundred summaries of his debriefings were sent to the CIA, which then became a pillar - along with the now-disproved Iraqi quest for uranium for nuclear weapons - for the U.S. decision to bomb and then invade Iraq. The CIA-director George Tenet gave Alwan’s information to Secretary of State Colin Powell to use at the U.N. in his speech justifying military action against Iraq.

They just had to slip it in there, didn't they?

And I sez to myself, sez I, that either:

  1. CBS is so behind the times, they're literally unaware that the Iraq Study Group formally reported that Iraq was indeed on a "quest for uranium for nuclear weapons," and that one source of this datum was none other than Ambassador Joe himself;
  2. Or else they think the readers are so ignorant and stupid they'll never realize CBS just pulled a fast one.

I'm putting my money on Curtain 2, where Carol Merrill is standing. And sadly, there really are a lot of Americans who are that ignorant and stupid.

Oh well. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time -- and CBS reckons that's good enough for the Nielsons. But for me, when a putative news source makes a whopper like that in the part of a story I'm familiar with, I know how much credibility to attach to their claims about the stuff I'm not familiar with at all.

Pre-posting update: I just noticed something else... "became a pillar... for the U.S. decision to bomb and then invade Iraq." What do they mean, bomb and then invade? I recollect we launched one missile attack that we hoped would kill Hussein; but the next day was the ground invasion.

And then I had a revelation (or acid flashback): It was the 1990-1991 Gulf War that began with a lengthy bombing... not this Iraq war! We began the air campaign on January 17th, 1991; and we didn't start the full ground war until more than a month later, February 22nd. Thus, the "bombing" lasted 36 days before the ground game.

But in the 2003 war, we made one air attack on the Dora Farms (where intel said that Hussein might be visiting Uday and Qusay) on March 19th... and then the ground invasion began March 20th. Checking my memory in Wikipedia, I found these telling sentences:

Before the invasion, many observers had expected a lengthy campaign of aerial bombing in advance of any ground action, taking as examples the 1991 Persian Gulf War or the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan. In practice, U.S. plans envisioned simultaneous air and ground assaults to decapitate the Iraqi forces as fast as possible (see Shock and Awe), attempting to bypass Iraqi military units and cities in most cases.

You know, I now suspect the CBS newsroom ostentatiously refused to follow the fighting during the U.S. invasion of Iraq; they declined to honor the war with their presence. To those of us who did pay attention four years ago, the timeline is seared in our brains... thus we wouldn't make such a clumsy mistake.

I'll bet CBS didn't follow the invasion, and now they're just relying upon their vague and hazy memories of the Gulf War 16 years ago. What a maroon!

You are correct. People are ignorant and will accept what CBS tells them. This is the danger of the MSM, or anyone who lies with a big enough audience. Will the other MSM outlets now report verbatim what CBS says.

Of course, CBS may well be preparing the way for the Hillary/Bill accession to the throne. What other reason could they have for throwing Bush a bone.

According to the advance publicity...one of the "heroes" of the upcoming 60 Minutes piece is ex-CIA operative Tyler Drumheller. Why does that sound familiar? Because once before he said stuff on the same CBS program...which turned out to be completely wrong. See Reuter story below:

Senate probes clash over CIA reports on Iraq arms
By David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate panel has begun an inquiry to determine what a top official in Saddam Hussein's government told the CIA about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in late 2002 as the Bush administration made its case for war.

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence said in a Sept. 8 report that it launched the investigation after the CIA's former chief of European clandestine operations appeared on the CBS' "60 Minutes" news magazine in April. The official, Tyler Drumheller, told CBS that the Iraqi government source had said Iraq had no active unconventional weapons program.

Drumheller's disclosure contradicted spy agency documents quoting the same Iraqi source as saying Saddam did have such programs, according to an addendum to the Senate report written by three Republican senators including chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas....

But in the Senate report, which compares prewar Iraq intelligence with postwar findings, the Republican senators said a CIA operations cable and an intelligence report to high-level policymakers both contradict Drumheller.

"# 2 Or else they think the readers are so ignorant and stupid they'll never realize CBS just pulled a fast one."

CBS, along with the majority of the MSM will continue to ATTEMPT to re-write history, (as they see fit), as long as they are not challenged. And they do rely on a portion of "stupidity" the drones absorb as "truth".

Drumheller, as Beresford pointed out above might as well be another Bill Burkett crony. Look for the fabrications to rachet up in the months to come. It will be surely fortunate to have people like Dafydd to expose the fabricators.

Sadly, it is probably the scariest of the two... the first possibility. This is in evidence in the MSM and in the Democratic Party. They aren't ALL trying to lie to the world, some of them haven't done any thinking on the subject, and rely on what they are told by the Party. Knowing that information brought down to them from On High has no need to be questioned (and in the backs of their minds they remember those who have... and never speak of them aloud) they go forth with that information as the useful Truthiness of Life.

Case in Point: Joe Biden.

When asked in an impromptu situation to describe how the War in Iraq started, he explained what he knows:

"Osama bin Laden set up camps there, and he was getting a lot of help from folks running that country called Afghanistan. And that's where he planned an attack on America to bring the World Trade Towers down and kill all those innocent Americans. We had a right to, and we should've gone, to Afghanistan to try to get bin Laden and those people who've done very bad things to America," he said.

Shame we never did anything about Afghanistan and the Taliban, huh Senator?

"But the president, I think, he got a little confused," he continued. "I think he thought the folks in another country, way, way far away, far from here, it's also far from Afghanistan, called Iraq. He said, 'The guy in Iraq he helped bin Laden do bad things to us,' and he didn't. He wasn't a good guy, but he didn't help. So we used that kind of as an excuse to attack Iraq."

This is what Joe Biden has been told... and what he believes. He is not alone.

You cannot know how much I would LOVE to have the elected Democrats polled on their recent History. What do they know, and how did they learn it...

...and for our Nation's safety, we should Poll the Republicans on the same subject. "POP HISTORY TEST ON THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE! BRING YOUR #2 PENCILS AND NO SHARING ANSWERS OR YOU LOSE HALF OF YOUR CAMPAIGN FUNDS!!!"

You are too kind to CBS. They, like the rest of the old media, have been dedicated to misdirection since the election in 2000 and they have not given up. How else did they bring down the numbers of a popular president? By unceasing and repetitive rhetoric and lies. And don't forget 25 years ago they not only brought down the numbers of another popular president but also his presidency. All their reporting on impeachment was directed at this. This is their goal with every republican president and we will see it again and again.

Sorry for the double entries.

Slow Joe sounds like a grade school drop out. His grasp of foreign policy and the war in Iraq is a joke. I wonder about congress. They surely must have the highest rate of stupidity than any other organization on the planet.

You had a very good summary of all the WMD and related stuff found in Iraq some time ago. Some of that data should be applicable here. Also, I seem to remember that the US took about 4 tons or uranium ore out of Iraq about a year ago, so obviously Iraq was interested in doing something with that uranium ore. When did you do that post?

I'm not sure exactly which post you're talking about. But in the sidebar on the right, you can find two different search engines -- one under the label "Sniff Out," the other under "Technorati Slither Search." (I'm not sure of the difference; maybe you can figure it out?)

You can use these search engines to hunt through Big Lizards to try to find the post: type in keywords or phrases that are relatively unique and see if you can locate it.

When you do, please post again with the link!

Thanks,

Dafydd
