And the Envelope Please #003

Hatched by Dafydd

The winners of the Watcher's Council award for best blogposts of the week are...

Among Watcher's Council members:

Among the slug-a-beds who haven't joined the Council:

But should you desire to read all the others who garnered at least one vote (which doesn't include Big Lizards this week -- we were shut out!), rush to make your own judgment by reading Watcher of Weasels' full report on Weaselpalooza.

And at last, I shall answer the burning question from last week: For whom did I vote in the last Watcher's Council linkfest?

Among Council members -- where we are not allowed to vote for ourselves -- I cast my primary vote for the American Ideon: Its Decay and Restoration (Eternity Road), and my secondary for Muslim Cashiers Refuse to Touch Pork (Colossus of Rhodey).

Among the great unwashed, my primary was for Quote of the Day, and Is CAIR Paying Lawyers to Intimidate Air Travelers? (my own nominee, from Power Lint), and secondarily for Good News Never Sells (Kobyashi Maru).

Now, let's see how well the guessers did... all two of them. (That is pathetic. Jeez.)

Soccerdad got one right for 25%; he guessed that I voted for the Muslim Cashiers. Binder beat him with 50%, picking both the Power Line post on CAIR and the Eternity Road post, American Ideon.

But since 50% is still a failing grade, I have to say that nobody really won, and I'll never do that again. Slackers.

No, I meant "demographics." "Demographics" is to "demography" as "economics" is to "economy" -- and never mind that Webster's says it's not a real word! (Who gave them the final say, anyway?)

Also, I am not a "they" but a "he." (Only two of my personalities are schizophrenic, but one of those is paranoid and the other is out to get him.)

Yours,

Francis W. Porretto:

"Demographics" is to "demography" as "economics" is to "economy"...

Erm, actually demography is to demographics as economics is to the economy of Walla Walla or Poland or Upper Iguana. Demography is the science of studying demographic trends, just as economics is the science of studying economies.

"Demographics" requires a specifier -- just as "characteristics" does. You wouldn't write "Characteristics and the Medicalization of Human Existence," because everyone would say "the characteristics of what, now?"

If you meant to spill the beans in the title that you were most interested in the specific demographics of the boomers and how they affect the medicalization of society, you'd want to say "Boomer Demographics and the Medicalization of Human Existence."

Your post was excellent; I even gave it mental points for citing Larry Niven, the first SF writer I got to know personally (because he was so accessible at LASFS back in the 70s), and still one of my favorites -- for his older stuff; I haven't liked his newer books.

But I was utterly mesmerized by the legal argument anent student First-Amendment rights between Colossus of Rhodey and Rhymes With Right (which I think the latter won).

Even if I were allowed to vote for my own nomination, What the Meaning of "Fizz" Is, I would still have voted for Colossus and Rhodey instead; they were both better than my piece!

I really love complex arguments between two articulate people, which is pretty rare in the blogosphere. I had a good one with Beldar a while back that I'm sure I won (which I'm equally sure Bill thinks he won, the blind fool!)
