Dear President Bush;

The next time Russia threatens to sell TOR-M1 SAM systems to Iran -- or tanks, fighter jets, attack aircraft, submarines, AK-47 rifles, nuclear technology, or caviar -- can't we please just outbid them?

I mean, we can use the missiles as targets for our frequent Patriot II and Aegis anti-missile system tests. We can fly Su-33s, SU-35s, MiG-29s, and MiG-31s at Top Gun and Red Flag, to give our pilots and flight officers practice shooting them down. And God knows, we can always use more tracked-vehicle targets for advanced infantry and Special-Forces training.

I think the $700 million would be a lot cheaper than dealing with the consequences of more surface-to-air missiles under the mullahs' thumb. Thumbs? Thumb, whatever.

I'd even be willing to kick in $100.00 to get the ball rolling, if I got to watch an Aegis test live from the deck of a U.S. Navy destroyer or frigate. Will you take a post-dated check? We get paid on Friday.

Other than that (and the whole Gratz/Grutter thing), you're doing great. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

Dafydd ab Hugh, Big Lizards lesser half

I wouldn't recommend watching an AEGIS test from the deck. If you get too close to the guidance radar - you're toast. Literally.

That is of course assuming that Russia would let us bid. They are clearly empowering proxies to fight us. They are selling very strategically - to Irana nd Venezuela. They are in a mini-cool war with us that could impact us more directly than the cold war did. Mis-perception of Russia now could be as bad as it was in the Cold War.

Russia can defend themselves against Islam (by murdering anyone who looks like an islamist); that's why they're willing to cuddle up with a violent islamist state. It's far more important, for Russia's grand strategy, to control all the oil in Eurasia than it is to prevent internal dissent. If Iran and Russia were enemies, after all, Iran could supply oil to nations Russia was pressuring.

And Iran could easily become opposed to Russia -- as you know, the second most popular nation among the Iranian people is the US.

I am totally with you D. I always wondered why we would not just pay the Russians not to supply these things. So what is a few billion dollars in a 2.5 trillion budget? Russia is just after the money, so give them it. Imagine if one of those SAMs took out a B2 bomber, the billion we paid Russia would be a billion less than our loss.

Then again the problem becomes that they would keep coming back to us to give them more, saying they had new deals, plus China would do the same thing.

It's a brilliant solution, though I imagine the Russians would just ask the Iranians to match our bid. Ultimately, this is not so dissimilar to what we are doing with all of our "aid" to former weapons research labs in Russia and, really, the Space Station.... It would be good for someone to take the "long view" look at those programs now to see if they've really made a difference.
