Extree, extree, read all about it! Now "global warming" makes glaciers grow bigger...!

Global warming could be causing some glaciers to grow, a new study claims.

Researchers at Newcastle University looked at temperature trends in the western Himalaya over the past century.

They found warmer winters and cooler summers, combined with more snow and rainfall, could be causing some mountain glaciers to increase in size.

So let's review the bidding:

  • Global warming is real, man-made, and catastrophic; every scientist who doesn't actually drool not only admits this, he wants to know why Bush hasn't issued an executive order smashing the looms already.
  • We know this because, for one reason, glaciers began retreating and shrinking the very instant the Industrial Revolution really kicked off in the 1940s.
  • Well actually, they began retreating in Africa about 120 years ago, before there was hardly any industrial-created CO2 in the atmosphere; but that's beside the point.
  • And as a matter of fact, glaciers have actually been expanding in New Zealand, North America, and Norway.
  • But coincidentally enough, it turns out that expanding glaciers are also signs of global warming! Mirabile dictu!
  • And while we're on the subject, Greenland has actually been cooling since about 1940 -- having earlier experienced a brief, ten-year spurt of warming in which the annual surface air temperature jumped up between 2°C and 4°C.
  • But that's all right, because cooling is also a sign of global warming; that's why we renamed it "global climate change," dummy!

All right; I think I've got it now.

I think...

It's all a Rovian plot to distract us from... well, whatever the "outrage of the day" happens to be.

And then there's the Russian scientist who says we are probably going into a cooling trend. Remember "The Coming Ice Age" from the mid-seventies.

Poor old AlGore, hitching his star to this bogus tripe. Makes me kinda glad I didn't vote for him.

All good pts, oh biggest lizard, however ...

maybe I haven't personally visited enough glaciers of late, but the ones I have checked out - in Western Canada, either off the trans-Canada hwy or the more northern Yellowhead route or even just the road between Banff & Jasper- are definitely smaller than they were 20 yrs ago.

I wonder if Roger Simon, who's trekking thru the Rockies right now IIRC, has noticed the same thing?

In any event, I blame capitalism for the decline/advance of the ice and its associated warming/cooling and concur that we need lots more govt to somehow make nature not do stuff. Also, it really bugs me when other people don't need me to run their lives for them.

I've been to Glacier National Park, Mount Rainier, and the Canadian Rockies. Most of those glaciers are retreating. I've been to Alaska 4 times, but the more plentiful evidence there is less clear. Yes, many of the glaciers in Glacier Bay have retreated but some are advancing. And the retreat began somewhere around 1900, long before SUVs and coal-burning power plants. Some rangers believe the principal cause was an earthquake that split the underwater terminal moraine (at the mouth of the bay) and let salt water pour in under the ice.

In Juneau, the Wrangell glacier is a prime tourist attraction. Over the last twenty years, we have seen, with our own eyes, the glacier's retreat. The park service has created a large viewing area and informational display there, showing how the glacier has retreated over time. The time scale begins in 1600-- the glacier has been retreating since then. Do you want to blame that on Tlingit cooking fires?

In Newfoundland, they're telling me that there are no more and no fewer icebergs than there ever were. Of course, these observations are based on human time scales. If the glaciers have been retreating for 400 years, we should not be seeing a difference.

Finally, if global warming is really occuring, and if it is partly man-made (both of which are questionable, IMHO), that still does not suggest a course of action. Why not? Because even if the alarmists are correct, and their radical de-civilization proposals adopted, we couldn't begin to "turn down the thermostat" for 50-100 years. It takes a long time to turn a planet around.

I visited a glacier in Chile that was some 3 miles further back when it was discovered in the 1600's than it is now. All those Incas and their peace pipes, no doubt.

Based on the data I've seen, I'm convinced that global warming is real. I mean, glaciers used to cover most of North America 10,000 years ago. Long Island is actually made of glacial till. The Great Lakes were gouged out by glaciers. So, no doubt about the warming. Cause is another issue.

Ever notice something? Many of the documentaries focus almost solely on proving that the Earth is warming. Of course this is the slam dunk argument. They then subtly mix the strong evidence of warming with the relatively weak evidence that it is human induced. The classic is interspersing pictures glaciers melting with pictures of traffic jams and smokestacks.

Lots of quotes like "Nearly every reputable scientist in the world agrees that global climate change is real!" Well, of course they all agree it is real. Doesn't mean they agree on the cause.

Man caused global warming (mcgw)is a faith based belief system. It is apocalyptic in nature, focusing on the settling of perceived suns of techno-industrial humanity. As you point out here, it is unfalsifable. Every piece of evidence, no matter how contradictory, is explained by mcgw.
The fact taht the earth has been much warmer and cooler in the time frames humans have existed as a species is not relevant to, nor explained by, the mcgw true believers. Now they are claiming that climatologists never raised concerns over global cooling in the 1970's. Not only does their faith explin evertying today, it compels them to edit history when it becomes inconvenient to their truth.
