Predictions: Judiciary-Committee Democrats Fail to Rise Above Lowest Expectations

Hatched by Dafydd

Crash and burn on my prediction for the J-Com vote! I wildly overestimated the Democrats' ability to recognize their own best interest. The vote of course included five Democrats voting against, not just Ted Kennedy: what is astonishing to me is that Joe Biden, Charles Schumer, and even Dianne Feinstein voted against Roberts. Dick Durbin I can understand; he's not exactly the sharpest crayon in the tank. But Dianne Feinstein? She's never been a wacko before; liberal, but not a captive to the MoveOn crowd.

Oh well; this of course means that more than twenty Democrats are going to vote against Roberts in the full Senate... but are they going to get forty willing to filibuster? I don't think they can: Harry Reid, leader of the opposition, insists he will not vote against cloture; besides, Russ Feingold, Herb Kohl, and Pat Leahy voted for Roberts, while Mark Pryor, Tim Johnson, Max Baucus, and Ben Nelson have already declared support, with Mary Landrieu and Kent Conrad "leaning" towards Roberts; that should make at least ten Democrats ostensibly unwilling to filibuster, which would make a filibuster impossible. So Patterico's earlier prediction is still possible... though since he unwisely signed aboard my prediction, I get to split the ignominy!

My other prediction, about the Iraqi Constitutional vote, is still live, of course. I sure hope the Iraqi voters are smarter than the Democrats....

but are they going to get forty willing to filibuster?
...SNIP

Make them use it. 'Nuke' them for doing so. They knew before the 2000 Elections (i didn't Vote back then, though i am quite old) that there would be vacancies on the Supreme Court coming up. Heck, they may have even figured "three" back then, back when "three" was just a rumor. Filibustering Roberts isn’t a rational choice for them, since another appointment is already needed, and it is only September of 2005...so to speak.

Saudi Arabia: Feeling the Iranian Pinch in Iraq

This ain't a situation where one would want the Democrat Party’s ‘lEaDeRsHiP’ to make choices...so to speak gently.

The best that the Democrat Party has offered for decades were Jimmy "The Mullah" Carter and more recently, Bill 'You-Know-Who' Clinton. Bill rode "Stock Market Bubbles" whilst cutting security, and whilst ignoring the threat of Terrorism.

Summary

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal says U.S. policy in Iraq is exacerbating sectarian divisions to the point of effectively handing the country to Iran. With a Shiite-led government poised to take control in Baghdad and the United States eager to relieve U.S. forces in the region, the House of Saud is growing increasingly anxious at the thought of Persian influence seeping across Iran's borders at the expense of Iraq's Sunni community. Riyadh therefore is signaling Washington that U.S.-Iranian cooperation over Iraq could spell trouble for U.S. relations with the Saudi kingdom.

Analysis

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Sept. 21 that Washington is essentially handing Iraq to Iran on a silver platter.

SNIP...

Now...what would Jimmy and Bill do in such a situation, besides trying to ignore it? Well, basically, nothing.

A *LOT* is going on, MSM misses 99.9% of it, and "W" rolls on. Heck, most Americans didn't even know that America and Iran are talking. The Supreme Court is important, but...

If we had done the right things and built more refineries and done more drilling, I'd say give the Saudis the middle finger salute since it their kingdom's Wahhabbism that fueled Osama's fanaticism.

I rather suspected the vote would look something like this. The Dems wish to appear to be surly and reluctant but to be basically dragged along, so they'll have more excuse when they put up a food fight over the next nominee.

The more time goes on the more I hope they force a showdown on the filibuster. We should end the practice of allowing filibusters for ANY president's nominations for ANY office. It's a terrible practice. It was wrong when Republicans did it to Clinton too.

As for the Iraqi constitution: I have long suspected it will be ratified and am willing to sign on to your prediction as well. Perhaps one province will vote it down. Perhaps. I'll even go further--at least one of the three Sunni provinces will vote to ratify, not strike down.
