The Pineapple Shrub

Hatched by Dafydd

Say, I know this is trivial, but I think about it every election:

Do you all realize that 2008 will likely be the first presidential election in thirty-two years that does not have either a Bush or a Dole on the Republican ticket?

Every election since 1976 -- eight elections in a row -- has had the one or the other.

How about that!

The last election that didn't have one was Nixon's reelection in 1972; but unless Liddy or Jeb ends up on the ticket, 2008 will break the pattern.

But wouldn't be a sock in the jaw if Mitt Romney got the nomination -- and picked LIddy Dole as running mate?

She won't be on the ticket. It will most likely be Condi, despite the baying for her resignation from people who should know better you have heard in the past days. I strongly suspect that Jeb wants to stay out of the 2008 reckoning to freshen up the Bush brand name. What I am hearing, despite the Globe story, from the inside is that Rudy has problems and that the long range smart money is on a Romney/Rice ticket.

Hillary will do the predictable thing and pick Obama. Of course. She doesn't have half the political inventiveness that her husband posseses.

Where's Jeb? This little oversight or disparity has a very quick remedy. ;)

I doubt Liddy gets the nod after her 2006 senate recruiting season.

It's actually a little more fun than that. If you add Nixon, then with only a single exception, a Bush, a Dole or a Nixon has been on the R slate since 1952. So for 54 years, with the exception of Goldwater/Miller in 64, one of the three names has appeared on the ballot.

That's actually my biggest objection to Jeb running -- ever. I have no problem with the man himself. We just need some new blood.
