Sarah Palin and Guilt by Disassociation

Hatched by Dafydd

Ah, the distinctly noisome bouquet tells me that the 2012 presidential campaign has been uncorked early this year...

The attacks on Sarah Palin have begun again; and as before, since none of Palin's enemies can find anything troubling or disturbing about the woman herself, they're targeting her family, especially her children, once more:

Teen pregnancy, drug charges, burglary arrests. Appearances on the "Tyra Banks Show" that resembled a Jerry Springer segment. Charges of being publicity hounds and not paying for the diapers.

The family foibles continue to play out in tabloid fashion for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, adding unwelcome public drama for the former vice-presidential nominee as she seeks to solidify her clout within a Republican Party that is smarting from the November election and sorely in need of a leader.

But wait... before proceeding further, let's get a little mroe specific on exactly what charges Palin's opponents within the GOP and her enemies among Democrats have leveled:

  • We all agree that Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol got knocked up; but that's last year's news, and it wouldn't cause a stir today, let alone in three more years.
  • What's this about drug charges? Oh yes, "somebody" in Bristol's former boyfriend's family -- not Palin's family -- was arrested for something involving drugs. That somebody was Levi Johnson's mother, Sherry Johnson.
  • "Appearances on the 'Tyra Banks Show',"charges of being publicity hounds and not paying for the diapers" all refer to the aforementioned Levi Johnson, Bristol's ex; he and his mother and sister decided -- without the blessing of Todd, Sarah, Bristol, or the infant Tripp Palin -- to appear on the tabloid show, goodness only knows why. (I have my suspicions, and they do, in fact, include the Johnson family being publicity hounds.)
  • After the appearance, during which Levi retailed lurid accounts of his sexual exploits that are hotly denied by his former girlfriend Bristol, Sarah Palin's father accused Johnson of not supporting Tripp Palin -- his legal obligation -- and suggested that he should take some of the money he's now making off of his former association with Alaska's first family and use it to "buy some diapers."
  • And burglary? That appears to be the half-sister of Sarah Palin's husband Todd. Diana Palin is married and has her own two children; she does not live with Todd and Sarah Palin.

So out of all the smoke of the allegations -- both the Democratic Party and Republican Party spokesmen puckishly decline to comment -- only one charge actually involves Sarah Palin's family. The rest involve Bristol's former boyfriend, his family, and Palin's husband's married sister.

Yes, I can see how the foibles of people distantly connected to Sarah Palin logically should damage her candidacy; after all, the bad behavior of her daughter's ex-boyfriend's mother certainly demonstrates that Sarah Palin is the hillbilly so many sources (on both sides the aisle) have insisted she is. And we certainly never see any relatives or family members of Democrats having problems... especially not the Democrat current occupying the White House; this situation is something utterly unique to Palin.

When Democrats (with GOP complicity) finish off Palin, they will surely start in on Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana. Did you know that he's a hillbubba? And he has a funny name... what's up with that?

I will certainly admit one solid slam against Palin: She clearly was not firm enough in teaching her daughter the sort of boys to avoid. If that's enough to turn you away from her future candidacy, so be it.

It is worse than that.

The dems up here in Alaskaville are pulling out every stop to embarrass, harass, and generally knock Palin at every opportunity. Some of it is envy, but some of it is certainly directed by the national Democratic Party.

I am puzzled - why do they hate her so very very much? I mean, she's justa governor of a small state. She ran for VP and was defeated. She's somewhat popular...but heck, that doesn't mean she can win a national election. She's not bad on the eyes...but so what? She doesn't seem to be much of a debater. What is it that inspires this almost existential fear in Democrats?

All I can think of is brand Obama. He of little substance depends on popularity and charisma to get by. She somehow threatens that.

A couple of things seem to be going on here. One, the left demonizes all with whom they disagree. The degree of demonizing and delegitimization is proportional to the threat posed by the target to leftist and, in this case, femenist dogma. Two, the left knows intuitively that nothing works in our current age of sound bytes like constant repetition of a simplistic meme. It matters not that said meme is almost always false. Intellectual honesty has no place in the Orwellian left of today. Thus, expect the scurrilous attacks to continue - and to succeed if the last eight years are any guide.

But they aren't a guide; the Bush experience was unique, in that he steadfastly refused to defend himself, his policies, or his philosophy and ideology from scurrilous attacks by liars and exaggerators. After a while, even the GOP ceased to defend him -- even when his alleged "crimes" were easily defensible.

Katrina is only the most obvious example; see our post here... then compare the reality of what FEMA and other federal agencies did (some under Michael "Brownie" Brown, others run by the Navy, the Coast Guard, and so forth) to the risible fantasy spun by by Left -- and frequently agreed to even by conservative Republicans today; the Right has acquiesced to a monstrous lie, becoming complicit in its own destruction.

But why?

I think Bush's refusal to defend himself convinced the entire political commentariat, who are never so bright as they think they are, that the attacks must be true: "Silence implies consent."

By contrast, Ronald Reagan was always very quick not only to defend his policies and ideology but to explain them, endlessly, night and day if necessary. That is what made him "the Great Communicator," in contrast to George W. Bush, "the Great Obfuscator."

Barack H. Obama still runs fairly high in the polls, despite his astonishing anti-Americanism, because he too defends himself (even when he's not attacked!) and explains his policies. And he attacks the Right at every opportunity... something else we need to emulate.

(Polls be damned, negative campaigning really does work; provided the attacks are fair and just and can be sustained by evidence that the average voter can understand.)

It makes little difference at at this stage, just a few months into his presidency, that his defenses are lame and paralogical and his explanations are gobbledygook... just the fact that he defends and explains persuades a strong percent of the undecided population that would otherwise be skeptical.

Thus, I believe if Republicans in general, and our next presidential nominee in particular, will follow the Reagan communications model instead of the Bush non-communications model, voters will actually have the opportunity to evaluate both sides again; and we will return to a certain normality, where you can't just say something will work... you must prove it by results.

(By the way, are you back posting at your site? You seemed to have gafiated for a long while.)

I just emailed a friend, telling him this was the opening shot of 2012. And - the shots against her just keep getting worse.

Just look at O'Dumbo's real family. His real half brother is banned from the UK due to a 'sexual' attack on a teenage girl and O'Dumbo himself couldn't qualify for a security clearance to work as a guard at WalMart. His uncle is a murdering POS Islamist in Africa. Go Sarah, we'll be better armed with slime on the democrats this time around. Like how many real felony type criminals has he put in high office in the U.S. government?

I do not recall Reagan's model, but then again, I was pretty much apolitical at that time. I could not agree more - and indeed have sounded the meme ad nauseum - that we need an effective communications model. The alternative is a country we will not recognize in eight years.

Will be resurrecting the site by Sunday.

Scariron - it is worse than that:

Palin - her daughter's ex-boyfriend's mother charged with drug crimes.
Obama- Admits to using drugs, maybe selling.

Palin - Daughter an unwed mother.
Obama - Mother an unwed mother.

Plain - Daughter's ex-boyfriend on Tyra Banks.
Obama - First sitting president to go on Leno.

Maybe they hate Palin because she is stealing Obama's schtick!
