My Fellow Prisoners

Hatched by Dave Ross

In Wednesday night’s debate John McCain made a verbal gaffe in which he referred to his audience as “my fellow prisoners.” Not yet. But that comes later.

Because under even the most optimistic scenario, if either of these two boobs wins the election -- and obviously as John McLaughlin would say, the chances that one of them will become president approaches metaphysical certitude -- we are in a world of hurt.

Both are total illiterates when it comes to knowing about the many forces that shape economies. McCain, at least, has admitted his ignorance. Obama has this knowing smile, like Chauncey Gardener in Being There, that implies that he possesses some secret knowledge. But when he opens his mouth, it is obvious that he too has no idea what to do about the economic tornado that we have all been snatched up by -- but which his political allies Barney Frank and company had much to do with creating.

Pundits have been trying to figure out why the stock market has been reacting negatively even though Congress agreed to pump nearly a trillion dollars into the credit markets. The answer should be obvious: they have finally realized that Barack Obama is going to be elected president. Although on inauguration day, somewhere in Washington, Barbra Streisand will be singing “Happy Days Are Here Again,” that is not the song they will be singing on Wall Street as they watch the good times roll... away. When FDR took over an America wracked by the Great Depression, he and his advisers spent eight years tinkering with the economy yet never managed to significantly improve unemployment figures, despite throwing billions of dollars at the problem. It was WWII that solved the Great Depression, as any but the most partisan historian will be forced to admit.

We are facing the most liberal crowd since LBJ’s days taking control of the White House and Congress. These are not pragmatists like Bill Clinton, who, when confronted by policy that didn’t work, nimbly danced away and tried something else. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Obama are true believers; when they try their socialist solutions to the economy, they will not be deterred by negative consequences. Like a medieval doctor confronted by a patient who slowly loses strength under repeated blood lettings, they will be inspired to open up a few more veins.

My most optimistic scenario sees Barack Obama as another Jimmy Carter, and possibly Sarah Palin as the new Reagan. If Obama gets a filibuster proof 60 seat majority in the senate you could see a whirlwind of legislation that could so stun the electorate and harm the economy that we could see a repeat of the 1994 Republican takeover.

Remember, we continue to live in a center right political landscape; unless Obama’s solutions are different than what he is preaching right now, they will put the economy into a death spiral. The Democrats in victory have always shown themselves vulnerable to overreaching. So expect them to reimpose the so-called Fairness Doctrine and put Talk radio into orbit... quite literally since Rush and company will undoubtedly set up a resistance in exile on satellite radio, which could lead to even more overreaching by the left -- i.e. trying to extend FCC regulatory powers to satellite.

The one wild card here is the Supreme Court, which, one hopes, will get to rule on challenges to these blatant attempts at silencing dissent early on in the Obama presidency. But don't count on it.

Like Carter in 1980, even a wounded Obama will probably be able to fend off a challenge by Hillary, which means we will likely see a match up between an incumbent Obama and a much savvier, much more seasoned Palin than the one we see wowing crowds by the tens of thousands.

So, my fellow prisoners, settle in for the long haul.

I think you are seriously underestimating the damage that will happen under an Obama admnistration with a filibuster proof majority.

Yes, they will reintroduce the Fairness doctrine and they will push it onto Satellite radio and the internet.

I suspect they might try ginning up some sort of hate crimes charges against people like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Michelle Malkin, et al and have them thrown in jail.

They will nationalize the Healthcare, Energy and possible the Telecommunications sectors.

We are not looking at a death spiral, but a flaming nosedive into the ground.

By the time the 2010 mid-terms come, the democrats will see they are going to be essentially destroyed at the polls and decide that "Due to the current national emergency, we must postpone the election."

Think that won't happen? Take a look at the mindsets of the people running the democrat party.

These are people who hold the democratic process and the Constitution in utter contempt.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to go polish my tinfoil hat. :)

So, my fellow prisoners, settle in for the long haul.

If this is the case, maybe McCain should do a "parting shot" ad that shows a thirty second clip of his stay in the Hanoi Hilton, followed by the statement: "This is where you will end up with an Obama administration----surrendering to socialism/communism is not an option in my book, but it is Barack Obama's plan to "CHANGE" America".

While I do think that an Obama presidency, coupled with a Pelose/Reid Congress, would be a disaster, I don't think it wise to assume quite as much as Evilned or Texas Jack (though buying guns and ammo is always a good idea under any president). If/When Obama overreaches, then we need to clobber him for it, but assuming that it's going to happen just sounds paranoid.

What a sad state of affairs that we find ourselves wishing for Bill Clinton.

Palin??? It’s time to put down the crack pipe; there is not a dumber politician at the federal level. She makes Dan Quayle look intelligent.

She’s not even up to the standards of ******** material. [Are lefties all so sexually inadequate that the only slur they can think of hurling is pre-pubescent pornography? --The Mgt.]

And we heard similar whining when Clinton was running. Republicans got on TV and whined and moaned and claimed that the nation would be bankrupt.

We all saw how well that turned out; under Slick incomes went up for all quintiles and we had a golden age.

Perhaps needless to say -- but I'll say it anyway -- this post is by David Ross and represents his opinion. I do not at all believe that Obama's election is inevitable; I give him only a 55% chance of winning at this point, with all the polls except Gallup drifting back towards McCain.

Nor do I believe that if Obama does win, it will be like 1992 -- to be followed swiftly by a 1994-style Gingrich revolution. If he wins, I believe it will be more like 1932... followed by many election cycles of Democratic control of Congress. So I'm more optimistic on the first point but more pessimistic on the second than my worthy co-blogger.

Well, that's pretty damned depressing. Prolly accurate though. I used to say we had to suffer through Carter's ineptitude to get to Reagan...but a friend of mine (active duty, serving, as I used to) that while that was true, we are still dealing with the aftermath of Carter's bungling of the mid-east, particularly Iran. Most of our troubles there can be traced directly to him, his betrayal of the Shah, and his "do-good"erism...if that's a word.

Texas Jack, good advice. Always do.

As for the other...the reason Clinton's economy was a "golden age" (although that's an exaggeration) is fallout still coming from Reagan, and because when Clinton, lying (what??), broke his promise and tried to raise taxes, the new 1994 Republican majority forced tax CUTS down his throat. He promptly signed, and claimed the idea as his own, and took credit for it.

I think we do ourselves a disservice by talking about the economy going down during an Obama administration.

Will he do many negative things to our economy? Yes, he can! Specially with the help of his fillibuster proof majority.

However, perception is everything in the stock market. If bubbles havn't taught us that, nothing will. People in the Nasdaq were buying new worthless internet companies for huge amounts and losing everything betting on nothing.

Essentially, people are selling their stocks off right now not because somehow our economy has collapsed. It hasn't. Unemployment is at 6%. I went to dinner last night with the wife and the place was packed. Even with the housing crises more people today own their own homes that throughout the history of the United States.

Our economy is in great shape.

The problem in the markets is perception. If the media does its job well, it creates the perception of a bad economy which creates a sell off in the markets. This sell off fuels the perception that the economy is doing poorly. If this is the case on election day, Barack Obama wins in a landslide. Thus, all the Democrats who work in the press rooms are trying their hardest to talk up a bad economy.

As soon as Obama is elected, it will be mostly shineshine and roses. The same bad news will exist just like the same good news will exist. But the bad news will no longer be highlighted. There will be more important news stories about health care, taking care of the poor/homeless, terrorism, jobs, you name it. Anything but focusing on a bad economy.

Thus the perception will change and the markets will come back up.

Does anyone seriously believe that they are living in a great depression right now? Who has changed thier behaviour recently? Very few, that's who.

I'm going to the movies.

After Tuesday, November 2nd, things will all get much better. Not immediately, of course, that would be too obvious, but the focus will change. It will change to the future and hope and change and more hope.

Oh, I should also note, we never should have surrendered this piece of ground to the enemy.

The minute we all started shouting the same things the democrats shout about our economy and using the same language they use, we lost. McCain was right when he said the fundamentals of our economy our strong. We should have laughed at the Democrats and their media psychophants everytime they tried to talk down the markets and the economy.

Yes, an uphill battle for sure. One we might not have won. But we had a chance if we fought for it, instead, we surroundered and now people even on the right seem to agree that the economy is all doom and gloom.

Nonesense!

I noticed a couple of gaffes that went unnoticed in debate

For example, Biden disclosed that Achmadinijad "...was not the one in charge in Iran". ? . So, if he's not in charge, then why "sit down" with him? And if one takes counsel against such foolishness, then just whom shall we "sit down with"? Perhaps the same negotiators from some 20 odd european nations (and negotiators from U.S. I would add) who've been "sitting down to talk with" Iran about shutting down its WND program, for the past six years. To no avail.

Also, did you notice gracious Obama, beginning one of his answers- "Some of you may remember 9/11...". Some of "you"? How about All of us remember it. How about the fact that what we also remember is that an attack of that magnitude has not occurred since. Free lance attacks, such as an Egyptian attack at LA airport, an attack in Seattle, A shooting spree at a mall in Utah etc. But has it occurred to the oh wise Ubama, that Al queda hasn't been at liberty, shall we say, to plot and conduct attacks from the precarious position of some caves in Izzweirdistan lately?

Millions of hardworking Americans with low-paying jobs and bad credit are facing forclosure. What is wrong with this sentence? The assumption that they should be allowed to have a mortgage.

Rent a home, or an apartment, until you can afford to buy a home.

Impossibly cheap credit has been the precursor of economic crashes in America. Why didn't we see this coming? Oh wait, we did.

How quickly will the Dems grab the low hanging fruit and change the 1997 Taxpayer Relief Act?

You know they will never be able to keep their hands off that ripe $500,000 tax exempt profit that home owners can earn after living in their homes for 2 years. Sure a ton of equity has gone kaput, but there are still millions of us who have unrealized profits and you can bet we will once again pay outrageous capital gains.

And I would be willing to bet that if every home owner realized this inevitable fact, that would be enough votes to deny Obama his prized White House.

The pain of paying a huge check to the Feds after they sell their house will have millions of people thinking, "what an ass I was, what was I thinking?"

You weren't.
