The Fortitude of a Lizardette

Hatched by Dafydd

My little sister Julie is just about due to give birth to her first child (she and her husband have already picked out the name Madison, which I like a lot -- especially as the obvious nickname is Maddy). I just called to see how Julie is doing, and the following high jinks ensued:

Dafydd: Are you planning to use anaesthetic?

Julie: Oh yeah; I'm not a big fan of pain. I'm definitely getting an epidural. I'm a little nervous about a spinal injection, but I'm going for it anyway.

Dafydd: A lot of women like to experience every sensation of giving birth; you're not one of those?

Julie: Dafydd, if I could be in the other room when Maddy was born, I'd go for it!

I'll announce here when the Madster enters the world. Sachi and I are too old to have kids now (theoretically we could adopt, but they don't like adopting kids out to older parents), and my brother Boffo and his better half have no interest in kids so far; so this is as close as it will get. (Of course, determinations can change, and the latter pair are younger than Julie.)

Maddy can be our rent-a-kid, returnable the moment novelty wanes...

Look out for the fine print in any rent-a-kid contract! Years ago, a friend of mine got stuck with a rent-a-kid for 10 years. It was either that or pay an early return penalty of almost $1-million...

Julie sounds like a very sensible person. May Maddy provide much enjoyment and pride to Julie and her husband, and to you and Sachi. Having said that, have you and Sachi ever considered fostering?

Epidural is the way to go. My wife had our 3rd child (and first and only daughter) of four, what seems like just a few months ago (but I just drove her down to college for freshman orientation last Wednesday) at Bethesda Naval Hospital during Desert Storm (I was an Army guy, playing with the Marines, then). All the "regular" staff had been deployed; they were using Reservists. When my wife called for the epidural, the guy missed the spot twice. About that time, I realize he's being trained by the other doc, and I'm about to pipe up and say, "HEY!! Justaflippinminnit!! My wife is NOT a training aid!" when he got it in the right spot.

I was pretty grumpy about that, until she was born. She has been pretty much been running my life ever since.

Wife was pretty grumpy, too, until the drug hit. THEN it was cool!

Congrats to your sis. And do them a favor, at about 1 month, babysit for about 3 days, and give sis and hubby a chance to sleep and be human again. They'll appreciate it.

PS> And when I got back to Quantico, I placed a large box of cigars, and a large box of chocolate cigars (for the non-smokers) in the common area, in honor of "my little Green Barette!" an intentional pun which they found amusing.

If you and Sachi can be her godparents, that would make her a lot more than a rent-a-kid. I had a godson ten years before I had a daughter and there was real love and bonding between us. In our religion, I'm supposedly his spiritual parent and it did actually work out that way. He's now sixteen and 2,500 miles away but I think he still thinks fondly of his nono.
