Obama, Power, and Obama Power; Letters to a Blogger

Hatched by Dafydd

I sent this as e-mail to one of the great bloggers of our time. But upon reflection, I think it brilliant and witty enough to post on Big Lizards (thus sloughing off writing another monumental post like the last one). Egad, betimes my own eloquence astonishes even me.

Dear Mystery Blogger;

Have you read Jonah Goldberg's tour de force Liberal Fascism? If he's right -- and he certainly knows more about the subject than I -- then the purpose of Samantha Power's major foreign-policy proposals -- to send American forces to carve up Israel and hand over choice pieces to the Palestinians, and to precipitously flee Iraq while ethnically cleansing the inhabitants -- is not to achieve any particular result.

The purpose of them is simply to do them. "Action, action, action!", that is the watchword: simply to do something... anything!

Liberal fascists abhor the status quo more than anything else; the driving force behind this detestation may well be simple boredom, as Goldberg suggests (see previous post); they're filled with ennui when things stay the same and only feel alive -- and can only flex their power -- when they're actively changing things around.

It really doesn't matter how they change them; being pure pragmatists, they have no coherent ideology anyway. But when they're moving pieces around the chessboard, they experience the godlike high of pure power. They're shaking things up; they're on the move; they're taking action directe.

As I've been reading your chronicles of Power, I've applied this gloss... and suddenly it all makes sense. Obama is stunningly unspecific about what "change" he wants, because all he really wants is change -- any kind of change at all. The results are unimportant, so he's not fazed if the few changes he deigns to specify have already been tried before, and failed before.

Obama sees and describes himself as an astonishment to the world: the audacity of hope; an agent of change; the total transformation of the world; a blissful warrior against arrogance. He speaks in a messianic preacher-voice, because he sees himself as the Minister of the New (liberal fascist) World Order.

The aptly named Samantha Power plays Wormtongue to Obama's Saruman.

All that matters is to install a government led by a Great Man (Obama) who will quickly and decisively "solve our problems" by acting, rather than thinking or debating. Democracy is just too darn slow; all Congress ever does is talk and talk. We need rule by emergency decree to keep up with the changing times!

The people will simply have to jettison their quaint, old-fashioned ideas about individual liberty; the individual must be prepared to subordinate himself to the needs of the many. "Everything inside the state; outside the state, nothing." Private ownership of property is acceptable -- so long as all property is controlled by the state.

Hillary Clinton is also a liberal fascist (in the mold of Woodrow Wilson or FDR), hence the similarity of their plans. But Hillary has the misfortune of not being a charismatic, cultic leader... so her only chance at power is to use the bureaucracy to snatch the nomination from the Great Man himself (though I strongly suspect she will lose that fight).

These are dangerous times we live in, Mystery Man; but not for the reasons that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton enunciate. The best thing about John McCain is that he may be a great American, but he's not a Great Man!

McCain has no interest in ruling by emergency decree, and the democratic process is plenty fast enough for him.

Are you sure about this, Dafydd? Whom Obama reminds most of is my Congressman from the days of my youth, Dan Rostenkowski, who could talk endlessly in platitudes and cliches and probably the only straight answer he ever gave in his life was to the question: "Will you, Daniel, take this woman...?"

Obama's boss, Richard M. Daley, on the other hand, is largely as you describe but he seems just a plain old-fashioned fascist (sic) fascist to me.

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."

The boy David was tending sheep when the Prophet Samuel came to his house and anointed him--some are born great....

The lad David was taking food to his brothers on the battlefield when Goliath came out and challenged them. David picked up 5 smooth stones and with the first of them he entered legend--some achieve greatness...

And then, after becoming rock star, refugee- madman, political prisoner, guerilla leader, poet-warrior, tribal leader, and marrying three or four times...(Phew...What a Guy! All this before he was 40!) he is finally, despite all his protestations, asked, by ALL his people, to be their king--and some have greatness thrust upon them!

McCain has the heredity to be a great American; he has achieved in his lifetime a bona fide acceptance as a great American (most Americans, even some who don't like him, acknowledge that!)

And now, soon, now that he has learned HUMILITY (THE MOST ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT!)he is about to become a great Man.

"They are not empty whose low sound reverbs no hollowness." Shakespeare

The Israelites lived and were enslaved in Egypt for a total of 420 years, ONLY the last 210 of which were spent in that bitter slavery which transformed them into craven beasts of burden.

Still they kept on reproducing, so that after nine plagues, when Moses told them that in 15 days they would be leaving Egypt, the majority STILL DID NOT BELIEVE HIM! Neither the threat of the deaths of primogenitors, nor the promise of a Promised Land was enough to get them to sacrifice the comforts of mud roofs, straw beds and easy access to leeks and cucumbers!

The Rabbis commented: After 20 generations of life in Egypt and with every woman giving birth to 6 or more children THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE than the 600,000 who left Egypt. The Problem: there were many who WERE NOT DESPERATE ENOUGH to exhange the known state for the unknown state.

Where people are the least little bit contented, where they feel safe, where they have a roof and food and clothes, they will probably not want "CHANGE." cf the manumission of house slaves in 1865. cf the fate of the Revolutionary Councils in Revolutionary France.

That's why Obama, with his mantra of "Change you can believe in" is, in this view, on a losing track, probably to Hillary, definitely to Mccain.

Michelle's screams of alienated pain, Barack's declamations of imminent relief, will be drowned out by the low murmurs of people going about their lives of quiet desperation, not yet desperate enough to choose the devil they don't know over the devil they do!

A proper plague Politics; out of the mouths of the damned
Turbid flow the issues; it’s getting out of hand!
Banks which once were overflown, are now blown back to sand.
By bomb and bullet maimed, blood flows into the land.

For it is the earth that suffers in a cynical generation
Urged on by might, right, democracy, predestination;
Ungrounded, unfounded intelligence, compound networks of lies
Brought to you by those same agencies which also handle your wives
United nations claiming common grounds, prepared to lay down lives
Promising salvation as a prompt condition, and set to buzz around the ayes.

A terminal sickness Ignorance; multi-indifference is fair
As in darkness vive la difference, weltschmerz we will bear!
Beat that bloated animal would you? Is this all that we can spare?
While the earth cries out in pain and I tear out my hair?!

If you think about it a president who promises only "change" and "hope" can make an end run around the law of unexpected consequences. He can make any changes he wants, however ill-advised, and then fulfill his promises by doggedly hoping things will somehow turn out for the best. It's not like he is promising results.

The only change I'm looking forward to is Hillary and Bill going on a long lecture circuit and finally having no relevance to how this nation is governed.

Oh, and Mr. "hope n change" returning to the senate for some well deserved voting opportunities,(something other than "present")

Excellent post - thanks for sharing it.

Right and right - Liberals always seem so...exhausted by democracy. Don't out debate someone, call them a fascist! Change the rules if they don't suit you. The first impulse of liberals is always towards nondemocratic means, via the courts, via executive order, via violent protest.
