A Vietnam Reeducation

Hatched by Dafydd

Near as I can make it out from this video clip, here is what Sen. John Kerry (D-MA, 95%) said on C-Span today:

Let me just say to the first part of your question with respect to Boat People and killing... everybody predicted a massive bloodbath in Vietnam. There was not a massive bloodbath in Vietman. There were reeducation camps, and they weren’t [garbled]. Nobody likes that kind of outcome, but I’ve met a lot of people today who were in those education camps who are thriving in the Vietnam of today.

There you go, no bloodbath in Vietnam (no word about Cambodia, land of the Magic-Hat People), just education camps... sort of like combination job-training and day-care centers.

The clip ends rather abruptly, so perhaps Kerry went on to bring up Cambodia and how the killing fields there utterly undercut his own demand that we pull out from Iraq just as precipitously as we did from that Southeast Asian country that didn't have a bloodbath. Anything's possible... but I doubt it.

Good lord, what do you expect from Kerry? It is not like he has a great track record of accuracy when it comes to Vietnam (or anything else for that matter).

As for his statement itself, I would question how many people, that have been through the reeducation camps, he has actually met and had any conversation with. Somehow "lots" isn't the adjective I would have thought of. One, or maybe even a few, seems far more likely, and I would not be surprised if the correct answer was zero.

All of this brings up the question of why the voters continue to elect people who keep making such silly and inaccurate statements. As long as people like Kerry, and all the others in congress, know that there is little chance of being held accountable for stupid statements, they will continue to make them. As Pogo said many years ago, "We have met the enemy, and he is us." Until we, the people, are willing to demand better from our elected representatives, we certainly won't receive it.

I missed it, fortunately. Did he happen to mention the Boat People, and those lost at see seeking freedom? Honestly, if 30 years ago I had read about Kerry and Gore saying the things they actually are in a science fiction novel, I would have tossed it in the trash. I have a pretty good ability to suspend disbelief, but this exceeds anything I can manage.

Back in the day Kerry said that there would not be a blood bath in southeast Asia if we left, in fact the war would end because we were the problem. He has not changed much, he is still a fool.

From the video clip, it appears that his words "..weren't [garbled]...", appear to actually be "...weren't pretty...".

Such an understatement regarding re-education camps of the communist variety - if that's what he actually said - is par for the course from Kerry.

John J. Coupal:

From the video clip, it appears that his words "..weren't [garbled]...", appear to actually be "...weren't pretty...".

Could be; that would make sense in context. But when I listened again, primed to hear "and they weren't pretty," what I heard sounded more like "and they weren't Curly." (Perhaps the camps were Curly-Joe instead.)

Of course, I also listened again and again to Majority Leader Dick Armey's remark about Barney Frank, and every single time, it sounded like "Barney Fank" to me... never once like "Barney Fag." So what do I know?

Senator Kerry seems to have suffered some sort of brain anurism. Who does he think he is fooling with his 1984-style comments? I guess he can try to control the past to control the future, but I don't think its gonna work. The man belongs in an institution, and its not the United States Senate. Its one with rubber walls.

Some one needs to ask Kerry if he believes Auswitch was also a re-education camp. Re-writing history seems to be the norm for many of these baffoons who think they can say anything and it is accepted as gospel.

It was also interesting that the question was posed by a democrat (on the democrat line) and the lady was expressing sincere concern for the fate of the Iraqi people.

In a life filled with stupid, lying, ignorance, John Kerry has reached a new milestone: blithering idiocy.
Even according to the most favorable measures, 165,000 people were killed in those 'camps'.

This is OT, but I just read
an news article of a sort Dafydd has oft heaped amusing scorn upon. This one's almost self-mocking.

The title is "Bush Alters Rules for Interrogations". In my best Darth Vader impression: He has altered the rules. Pray he does not alter them further.

The money quote in the article is that this executive order is "the result of legislation Bush signed in October that ... eliminated some of the rights defendants are usually guaranteed."

OTOH, I liked Snow's approach: "The president has insisted on clear legal standards so that CIA officers involved in this essential work are not placed in jeopardy for doing their job—and keeping America safe from attacks." I've really wanted some clear, persistent standard on this. Of course, this executive order could conceivably be overturned by the next president, so it's not as solidly persistent as a statute... But we're not going to get anything sensible out of this Congress anyhow, so let's be happy with what we've got.
