Pro-Tribunal Democrats

Hatched by Dafydd

Big Lizards promised to have the list of the twelve Senate Democrats who voted in favor of the military-tribunals bill (S. 3930); Big Lizards delivers:

  • Tom Carper (DE, 90%)
  • Tim Johnson (SD, 95%)
  • Mary Landrieu (LA, 95%)
  • Frank Lautenberg (NJ, 100%)
  • Joe Lieberman (CT, 80%)
  • Robert Menendez (NJ, 100%)
  • Ben Nelson (NE, 55%)
  • Bill Nelson (FL, 80%)
  • Mark Pryor (AR, 90%)
  • John "Jay" Rockefeller (WV, 100%)
  • Ken Salazar (CO, 100%)
  • Debbie Stabenow (MI, 100%)

Five of these senators are running for reelection (boldface), but seven are not; there seems to be no consistent pattern to their relative liberalness. If anyone can detect a pattern here, beyond individuals simply deciding that national security is more important than party solidarity, let us know.

I am posting this here, because I am not sure where else to post it, and I am sure you are interested, if I am correct. My surmise is the October surprise will come this next week when Bush appoints most of the judges that didn't get moved out of committee to recess appointments.... you heard it here first....

Good job Bill Nelson.

Doesn't an October Surprise usually involve a major piece of dirt being revealed?

Isn't Rockefeller on the Senate Intelligence Committee? That seems hugely significant to me...

Yes; and rather odd at that. I mean, if they had a House Big & Tall Committee, they wouldn't put Dennis Kucinich on it.

Still, I'm glad Rockefeller voted the way he did; but doesn't that make those senators who voted the other way -- not just Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton, but Lincoln Chafee -- look like macacas?

True. As rabidly partisan as Rockefeller has been in recent years, he's also privy to far more classified information than his Dem colleagues. And if he thinks voting against the tribunals is a losing bet, then it seems even sillier for the rest of his pack to ignore that example.
