The Madness Accelerates

Hatched by Dafydd

By "madness," I do not mean the wholly justified Israeli invasion of Gaza -- but rather the mindlessly defiant Palestinian response, where they appear to be ready to immolate their entire world, just to avoid giving up one hostage Jew.

Now, a new group has run pell-mell into the buzzsaw screaming "Allahu akbar": Hezbollah, feeling neglected (and tired of living in this vale of tears), just streamed across the Israeli-Lebanese border and, it appears, abducted two Israeli soldiers. Evidently, they looked upon Gaza and saw that it was good, and said, "Geez, I sure wish I had me one o' them Israeli Defense Force invasions!"

Hizbollah guerrillas said they had captured two Israeli soldiers in cross-border attacks from Lebanon on Wednesday in which three Israelis were also reported killed, sharply raising Middle East tensions.

Israeli ground forces crossed into Lebanon to search for the captured soldiers, Israeli Army Radio said. It said many troops and aircraft were taking part in searches across the border.

I can see Hezbollah's reasoning: kidnapping IDF soldiers has worked out so well for Hamas in the Gaza Strip; how could Hezbollah resist joining the fun? Of course, the most likely result will be a massive Israeli armor attack that annihilates Hezbollah strongholds from Beirut to the Bekaa Valley and from Tyre to the shores of Tripoli, crippling Iran (which owns Hezbollah) in the bargain and probably dragging Bashar Assad into the mess; but heck, you can't make an omlet, you know, without stepping on a few eggshells.

All right. Bring it on. We may see several terrorist groups try to gang-bang the Israelis: Palestinian Islamic Jihad is bound to feel abandoned; and al-Qaeda has been desperate to get a toe-hold in the Palestinian territories (perhaps curious to see the only people in the world more loathsome and degraded than they).

But one thing you will not see is a line of Arab nations rushing to support the terrorst sacrificial lambs. Don't look for Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, or Jordan to join the fray. You see, being actual, real countries, these entities have entirely too much to lose to poke the tiger with a stick. In fact, while Lebanon may well lodge a "protest" at the U.N., in secret they will be cheering the Israelis on.

Happily for the civilized, and alas for American and European antisemites who are becoming thicker than the flies on Zarqawi's eyes, Israel has more than enough firepower to fight both Hamas and Hezbollah at the same time. Israel will win, one way or another; but there is a heck of a stretch between the two ways:

  • The terrorists can release IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit and stop shooting rockets at Jews. Then the Palestinians can start trying to put the rubble of what used to be their society back together again;
  • Or they can continue to make brainless, senseless, useless attacks cross-border... and watch everything they pretend to have fought for all these years be torn asunder and trampled underfoot by Israelis. In this response, Israel received such provocation from the Moslem terrorists that even the Europeans cannot help but tolerate, if not bless.

But which hand will the Palestinians seize, the right or the left? Remember, it was precisely for this group of people that some wag invented the aphorism that "the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity."

The Madness Accelerates further now, with Hezbollah doing the same in southern Lebanon as their Gaza wing did, again presumably at the behest of the Iranians, or at least their connivance. The terrorists must know that Israel cannot be forced into releasing legitimate prisoners, so the sole purpose of these events seems to be to create mindless conflict, following the al-Qaeda playbook.

Hello everyone,

Just discovered your blog through a link @ wizbang, nice site.

I share the pro-Israeli view. That said, I find it interesting that Mr. ab Hugh don't apply the same rationale in "The Madness Accelerates" that he convincingly argues in his post "Not Puppets".

In responding to Hamas' and Hezbollahs' provocations in the manner they do are not the Israeli's reacting in exactly the manner that Dafydd warns against in 'Not Puppets'?

Is not Israel as much at war with Hamas and Hezbollah, etc. as the US is with Al Qaeda?

My view is that Israel is internally divided between its hard liners and its appeasers with the majority torn and uncertain what to do or who to follow. If my view is correct, this situation necessarily leads to ineffective actions and inevitably devolves into an essentially reactive posture.

I am becoming convinced that Israel's problem centers more in its unwillingness to take the fight to Islam and continue that fight until its opponents sue for peace.

It's as if in WWII after the liberation of Paris, the allies hadn't invaded Germany but instead had stopped and asked Hitler if he was now willing to sit down and 'make peace'...

Oops! Correction:
When I said:
"I find it interesting that Mr. ab Hugh don't apply"

I meant 'doesn't'.

No, I don't think so. The essence of the behavior I complained about in Not Puppets was that we should drop our game plan in favor of a futile hunt through Iraq for specific persons... which is, as we already proved by our inability to capture Osama bin Laden, Ayman Zawahiri, and Mullah Omar, and by the length of time it took to finally nail Musab Zarqawi, at best a years-long process and at worst impossible.

(Zarqawi made it somewhat easier for us by staying in one country -- the one we occupied. There is no guarantee that the mutilators will do the same.)

What Israel is doing is very different: for many years, their gameplan has been to hunt down and kill the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah; thus, they are not off it at all... they have used these kidnappings as casus belli to do exactly what they intended (I believe) to do all along: to enter Hamas- and Hezbollah-held territory and wreck havoc until either one or the other (or both) capitulates by releasing the hostages... or failing that, until one or the other collapses.

That is, I believe Israel did not simply react but moved with all deliberation on a pre-crafted battle plan. The generals, I am certain, had told Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert "we have a plan, in case you want to re-enter Gaza for any reason. We have a plan to reoccupy parts of Lebanon, should that ever become necessary."

(Warning: I am of course imagining these conversations; I'm not quoting from any source. But I am convinced by Israel's actions that they took place.)

Olmert said to his cabinet, "now that we're formally separated from Gaza, and it's formally run by Hamas, we can respond to them as we would to any other country that attacked us... no kid gloves, no holding back. And also, it would be very much in our favor to move swiftly into Lebanon again and really pound the living bejesus out of the Hezbollah terrorists in the Bekaa Valley. So forewarned is forearmed: if they attack us, we will respond."

Then opportunity met preparedness, and the fight was on.

I htink Hamas/Hezballah are just fronts for Iran by now.
I think they have been promised specific and massive help from Iran to wipe out Israel.
I think we are going to see WMDs get used very soon.
As to monkyboy - of course you are too memory and ethicaly challenged to remember or care as to why Israel would attack.
Thank God you are just an internet troll.

It seems possible that Iran and Syria are pulling the strings. Maybe they are hoping to get Israel to use WMD, or want to use some of their own and are just looking for an excuse.

The conflict never ends, because the side with the power to crush their enemies (Israel) has morals, and the side without morals (Palestinians) does not have the power to crush their enemies.

So to end the conflict, either the Israelis lose their morals or power, or the Palestinians gain the power to beat Israel. I've given up entirely on the Palestinians ever gaining any morals.
