Well, again I'm not an expert, but I believe it had something to do with disgust at the lack of a proper response to Palestianian terror against Jews, and an unwillingness to sit by, like the Brits were doing, and just watch people die. You probably know what I'm talking about, since you seem to know words like "Irgun" (and I'm sure we'll hear about "Menachem Begin" and other stuff at some point): I'm talking about the denial of food supplies and cutting off water to Jewish East Jerusalem, posting snipers on rooftops to shoot at anyone foolish enough to venture outside for food, or kids trying to get to school. I'm talking about random shootings, kidnappings, bombs-- all the usual stuff.
