Untrustworthy Narrator

Hatched by Sachi

Dafydd's post below about the "treasure trove" of information we seized from al-Qaeda In Mesopotamia before Zarqawi's death missed one interesting point: AP, which reports on the document, doesn't seem to be sure it's really authentic:

The language contained in the document was different from the vocabulary used by al-Qaida statements posted on the Web. For example, it does not refer to the Americans as "Crusaders" nor use the term "rejectionists" to allude to Shiites.

Much of what is in the statement from al-Rubaie echoes results that the U.S. military and the Iraqi government say they are seeking. It also appears to reinforce American and Iraqi arguments that al-Qaida in Iraq and its operatives are a group of imported extremists bent on killing innocent civilians.

I guess they think that U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell might have written it himself, the way they believe our military is always running around planting evidence.

I sure wish they would apply the same level of skepticism to the Haditha accusations.

Dafydd replies: Oops, good catch. My media skept-o-meter is broken today!

UPDATED 2:

“When asked how he could be sure the information was authentic, al-Rubaie said “there is nothing more authentic than finding a thumbdrive in his pocket.”

AP, above all, should realize all that Crusader rubbish is for media consumption only.

By the by Dafydd, I think there is a cover up here. I'm not sure they "found" all that much useful stuff in the first 8 hours after the big bomb, but they said that to cover up what they were really doing.

I think they have been monitoring many members of AQ in Iraq for some time, establishing patterns, trying to find the big cheese. When they finally got him they went ahead and rolled up the whole network.

Classic counter-insurgency tactic.

It's a War (not "war"), and you still run from brutal me, huh.

Run away as much as you desire, but we both know that you are not really hiding from me.

Agree with Big D, stuff on AQ's website is for furrin consumption. What General Caldwell has released would be for internal operational use by AQ, which is apparently pretty savvy about manipulating the media to their advantage.

Condolences to the AP, which so enjoys that manipulation that it must be weeping for its 'freedom fighter' heroes while begging the survivors for more.

Monkyboy, Haditha is going to bite you poltroons in the rear. You will be regretting you were in such a hurry to get that report.

Monkygirl and its ilk won't regret anything. They'll just cry "coverup" and work on manufacturing some more "atrocities".

It is fitting that the two most populat hysterical cults in America today are that of man caused global warming and the war.
It is generally believed by the same people.
Both are based on ignorance and lack of critical thinking skils.
monkyboy is the poster child of this.

Back from your DailyKos tune up? Nice to see you back in simpering simian form.

Yeah, where the heck is that Haditha report? I mean Murtha and his ilk have already determined the answer, so what could be taking so long? Just write it up the way Al Jazeera says it happened.

"Iraq's corrupt politicians" Sheesh - they were elected by the Iraqis and have only been in power a few months. At least cut them some slack.

"Our troops hold off the Iraqis who are trying to stop them." Yeah. That's just what the insurgents are trying to do. Stop us from stealing their oil by blowing up hospitals, mosques, markets, and their fellow citizens. That will teach us not to touch their oil.

Bush is intentionally prolonging the war? Obviously this war has been a real boon to his popularity. I can't imagine why he would ever want it to end, it has been soooo much fun.

One never knows, but the war could be seriously winding down. Way to go, US Armed Forces! Way to go, Iraqi soldiers and police!

Michael Ledeen also thinks the "planning document" is a (very poorly done) fake:

"I think the Pentagon and the White House have put more effort into the timing and spin of the Haditha report than they put into post-invasion planning for Iraq..." But of course Al Queda, the media, the Democrats, etc. never time or spin anything. Just ask Dan Rather.

"As for corrupt politicians, even Chalabi got his shot to loot the Iraqi Oil Ministry" Hmmm Yeah. Chalabi. Didn't the political party he head win something like 48 % of the vote in January? So he's the Iraqi oil minister because he was...elected by the Iraqi people? Appointed by the Prime Minister? And the insurgents are angry at us because he's stealing? Or we're stealing? Or something?

Here's an idea - sit down and think out your conspiracy theories in advance, maybe even try to add in a few discernible facts. I know you can do better. Type less, think more.

It is abit annoying when twits like Kerry and monkyboy denigrate the Iraqis and declare them a potemkin village or puppet regime. When one counts up the thousands of Iraqis who have volunteered to make Iraq free from Saddam and the terrorists, and how many Iraqis have been slaughtered by these terrorists, I think I would like to see if monkyboy or Kerry were to have the guts to make their slanders in person?
It would be a fun, if totally one-sided reaction.
