The Chix Love "Country"... Just Not This One

Hatched by Sachi

On my last post Go North, Young Chix, a commenter left this peculiar message.

Basically, it's because many of you folks have misinformation (the Chicks LOVE our troops and our country), and are so mean about spreading your hate. [Emphasis added]

What is he talking about?

Our regular reader Dan Kauffman shed some light. This Dixie Chicks interview in a British newspaper, the Telegraph, certainly deserves some attention.

After describing how the Dixie Chicks are too sophisticated for us redneck women and how they "weathered" the unfair attacks from mean-spirited conservatives and even political oppression, the article reveals what the Chix have to say about all this:

The Chicks can't hide their disgust at the lack of support they received from other country performers. "A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do," says Robison.

"A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism."

How clueless they are.

  • They think the only reason other country singers did not support the chicks was that they wanted to cash in against the chicks.

Besides demonstrating a rather colossal ego on the Chix' part, I'm not sure Natalie Maines realizes what it implies about their rejection by country fans: if groups can "cash in" by attacking the Chix, that means there's a big market among country fans for doing just that. If the Chix were really as popular as the album sales indicate, then attacking them would have a negative effect on one's income, not a positive one.

  • The Chix reject out of hand the possibility that other country artists were as genuinely angry at the Chix as the girls were angry at President Bush. Evidently, the possibility that their professional detractors were simply being honest and straightforward never crossed their minds. (If they have minds.)
  • And of course, the DCs cannot imagine that other bands' display of "ultra-patriotism" might actually be sincere... especially after our nation was attacked. Patriotism is really just greed, stupidity, or ignorance, as far as the Chix are concerned.

Ah, but Elton John gives us some insight: the reason nobody wants to speak up for what's "going on" is because of Bush-induced censorship (hat tip commenter MTF):

Sir Elton John has attacked what he calls a McCarthy-like "era of censorship" in America. Entertainers who speak out against the Bush administration or its policy on Iraq, he claimed, risk scorn and damage to their livelihood.

Boy George, I think you've got it, Sir Elton: the American right of freedom of speech has always guaranteed a hit record and a successful concert tour. It's written right in the Constitution. (Again, we're back to liberals -- and some conservatives -- who have their own special dictionaries that don't seem to match the internationally accepted yardstick.)

As for Maines, that crazy, little thing called "patriotism" is simply a mystery to her:

"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country… I don't see why people care about patriotism."

I think this answers the commenter's claim that "the Chicks LOVE our troops and our country"... and resolves the burning question of who is actually "spreading [their] hate."

When Maines 1st started it all by speaking against the comander-in-chief on foreign soil during war, I put all the albums of thiers that I own in the cabinet to collect dust. It took several years but I like thier music so much that I had begun to listen to them a little bit again. I was starting to think "ok, I will forget about what occured." Then I hear that they have a new album coming out so I thought to myself ,"sure I'll buy it." Luckly, they started right back in with thier garbage that has nothing to do with entertainment before I had the chance to throw some money at them.

I'm sad about it but the old albums I had from way back when are full of scratches now and instead of replacing them I will simply let the chicks fall into history. I hate seeing an entertainer that I like get caught up in things that have nothing to do with entertainment. (Redford would be another who I like most of his movies but when they come on now days I simply change the channel because of his politics I can not enjoy the movie)

I had to correct my Friday post since The Chicks new album regained the #1 spot on Walmarts Top 100 CDs, but I tell you if only for one day have the Blue Collar Comedy Tour kick them out of the fist place tickled the S%^t out of me. ;-)

It's obvious that all us chawbacons cannot understand freedom of speech - probably because our parents and grandparents were siblings or something.

Freedom of speech means that Natalie Means can say her fill without paying any price whatsoever. I'm not talking about getting arrested or anything. What I mean is that us sister chasers have to buy Chicks singles & albums and pay $260 per seat to see Chicks concerts - just as we did before they shot off their mouths.

If we don't it means that the US is no longer a democracy and we're all living in the Bush Reich.

Sir Elton has obviously been suffering from McCarthyism for many years now so he ought to know. Ever since he broke up with Bernie Taupin his recording have sold like excrement - obviously due to a concerted Reagan-Bush-Bush intergalactic conspiracy against all that is wise, good, and enlightened.

The Chix new albumn is already at Overstock.com but really Amazon and Walmart has it discounted cheaper, BUT the BEST price is one Amazon's second source site.

Yes folks used albumns are now on the market, Guess some folks might buy it for a political statement, but want their money back too? ;-))

I live in Alabama, the "Heart of Dixie". I'm ashamed that the Chicks have sullied the name of this fine region. Natalie only shot off her mouth to get attention, and too bad for her, she got more than she bargained for. Her pathetic combination of defiance, cluelessness, and self pity makes me want to break out the tiny fiddles. Natalie, free speech is a two way street. Look both ways before crossing.

I firmly believe that the Chicksy Dicks should be allowed to say anything they want, anywhere, anytime. But they should not complain about their craptastic album sales when their moronic statements cause them problems. Bunch of overblown idiots without the common sense to know when to keep their ridiculous mouths shut. Of course, in about fifteen minutes America will have forgotten about those traitors, and start buying their bland, tastless music again. Witness Skywatch. I bet you like American beer too, buddy.

Going to sleep now and when I wake up I will check to see if any storms break because I left this comment on the Chix official bloggers site. ;-)
Chicks Magnet?

I agree with this statement
"Junichi, I love your blogs, but I think you are putting a spin on the reason some of the dates have been postponed. Please keep it real! Junichi, I love your blogs, but I think you are putting a spin on the reason some of the dates have been postponed. Please keep it real! "

Be a blogger or a publicist, If the former blog your own observations and what you can confirm, not what you are told.

"These rumors seemed entirely incongruous with the fact that the Chicks have been perched at the top of the Billboard album charts since the day the album was released"

Now that's true or was after 2 weeks at #1 they have now gone to #2 on the Billboard 200 for a Punk Revival Band whose only peaks on that chart previously were at #88 and #174 that is not what you call a meteoric sucess.

It's a little interesting that the article from last week says they'll be playing Uncasville, CT, which is presumably Mohegan Sun, and so far, the actual Mohegan Sun site doesn't list them at all (though their show is listed on the Ticketmaster site).

And the date, July 26th, is just a few days after Larry the Cable Guy, who has two shows there, on the 22nd and 23rd.

Sachi-

I'm not much of a country music fan -- Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks & not much more -- but I just ran into an AOL site with several Dixie Chicks videos.

Wow! Those ladies are really great! (If you just listen to the music and block out the lyrics.) I'm just sorry their politics will preclude my buying any of their stuff.

I recently ran across a new country singer named Ashley Monroe. She's pretty good, and no political baggage, at least not yet, that I'm aware of.
