Patterico's Brilliant Idea

Hatched by Dafydd

Over on Patterico's Pontifications, Patterico has a great idea for a codicil to be added to immigration reform pending in both the House and Senate:

We will never deport the millions of illegals currently residing in the country. But, as I have previously argued, we can use our scarce enforcement resources to target violent criminals. [All emphasis added by BL]

While many illegals are hardworking folk, some are robbers, kidnappers, rapists, violent gang members, and murderers. Police officers often know who these individuals are — yet they have their hands tied by local policy.

Targeting violent illegals makes good sense.

Patterico hasn't been posting much lately; I suspect he's in trial on some major prosecution. It's good to see him back today, and with an excellent suggestion for an amendment to the bill in Congress.

I'll swallow my ire at being played for a fool if we get a real fence, mandatory sanctions against employers for future violations, and as noted here, deportation for violent criminals. (No strikes and you're out.) In other words, enforcement of the deal we thought we had under Reagan.

I've linked from Senate to America: Assume a compromising position. Smile! Patterico's idea is a step in the right direction if it's backed by enough cops to give it some teeth. If I actually believed we'd round up all of the criminal element and throw them over that fancy new fence I might even soften my stance on amnesty for the rest.

Any plans to deport illegal aliens who have not commited any other crime, but do not register?

That's detail work best left to the administration to, er, administer.

My guess is it would depend on how many regularized themselves. If there were five hundred thousand left unregistered, it would probably be easier to go after them than if it were five million left.

That happens to be EXACTLY the detail left out of ALL the "previous" Amnesty Programs that we were told would "fix" these problems.

Shouldn't we be hearing a little more

"specifics" about this detail?

If there are 12 Million illegals and 2 Million register what do we do then. Let it slide for a few more years and do this all over again because

every knows we cannot deport 10 Million guests or do we start with one State say Maine and systematically search out illegal aliens and those who employ them deporting the first group and putting the second behind bars and then move to the next state etc?

Dan Kauffman:

Dan, listen carefully: everybody knows we cannot deport millions of people because we cannot deport millions of people. It is physically impossible.

Let's take just one state: California. There are probably between four and five million illegals here. Please explain, step by step, how you would go about rounding them up and deporting them.

No hand-waving, Dan; no Phil Donohue-esque "we just go right in there and get them." I want specifics.

And when you finish, you have forty-nine states to go.
