The French: You Gotta Love 'Em
Dr. Phat Tony's has a hilarious collection of French-bashing quotes. Here are some of my favorites:
- "Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion." -- Norman Schwartzkopf
- "As far as I'm concerned, war always means failure." -- Jacques Chirac, President of France
"As far as France is concerned, you're right." -- Rush Limbaugh - "I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me." -- General George S. Patton
I wonder why we find French-bashing so darned funny? Is it because they're always so smug and preachy?
Or are we just jealous because we're not as "sophisticated" as they? (Our riots are nothing compared to theirs, and nobody can work up a good theme-park blockade like the French!)
Perhaps we're still angry about the whole idea of fish-eggs sitting on top of smelly cheese on top of squares of stale bread.
In any case, none of these jokes would work with the British or the Italians. So there.

That first quote actually turns out to have been from Jed Babbin.
Which doesn't make it any less true, or less clever.

Blackfive retold the story recently about a British officer who was captured by the French a few score years ago and was asked why he was wearing a red coat. He told them it was so if he was wounded the blood wouldn't show up well enough to alarm his men. From that day on French officers have worn brown pants.
