» I'm Such A Right-Winger from SEIXON
Some commenters to my blog are convinced that I must be a right-winger due to my support of the strategy of the Iraq war, a sin, I know. In my post about ostracizing the truth, I made the case that... [Read More]

I loathe these tests because they are profoundly biased and produce results that reflect the desires of the authors.

Did you choose the axis or was it provided?
Shouldn't your choice of priority axis' be a key to your political identity?
Why isn't there a use of force axis?

The polarizing axis of the last election was not social permissiveness, it was the belief in the need to defend the nation after an attack. While this chart makes the Libertarian choice nexus very attractive, it ignores the fundamental failure of the Libertarian belief system; that nations are formed to provide collective security.

I strongly suspect that this chart does not reflect a willingness on your part to take a relaxed view on the need for national and civilizational defense. That indicates to me that the test and the chart are garbage.

In the above 'who are you' link I ranked as
Social Conservative (36% permissive)
and an...Economic Moderate (50% permissive)
best described as a: Centrist; exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness.

I've done this type of test before . . .on another website:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/
where I ranked as
Economic Left/Right: 0.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.49
(nearly dead center on graph)

Interesting to see the consistency.

If your desires and the desires of your ideal test's author were congruent, would the test remain profoundly biased?

The notion that fascists and totalitarians such as Stalin could be diagnosed by the innocuous questions of the test is laughable. Perhaps if a further level was added at each end of the scale beyond "strongly agree" and "strongly disagree" such as "anyone who disagrees should be summarily shot" or "anyone who agrees should be summarily shot" we might hope to begin to encompass such monsters. Note the idiotic positionings of the pictures after you take the test, e.g. Falwell equated to Bin Laden and Stalin. Equally laughable in another way is John Kerry positioned dead center. Dead anyway.

The labels are equally idiotic. When did "capitalist" come to imply anything about social liberalism or conservatism? Or to put it another way, according to this chart fascists are simply socially conservative capitalists. Anything a little bit more socially conservative than Reagan qualifies. When did fascists become economically permissive? This is the sort of mindless babbling that leads to "Bush is Hitler."

I expected better of you, Dafydd.

Well, on somebody's part, perhaps. I, however, did not design the test. I just took it because Patterico posted the URL on his site. (He didn't design the test, either!)

I have a history with this poll and severe disagreements with taking it at all seriously. I consider linking to it and posting your results entirely too much consideration for it's value as a determinant of political will.

I genuinely have a problem with any method of identification that does not take national defense as an equal consideration after 9/11. I put this poll on roughly the same level as one that purports to tell you what member of the Fellowship of the Ring you are. Except that nobody serious actually believes that they are Samwise after taking it.

Well, that's exactly why I enabled comments on this blog -- unlike, say, Hugh Hewitt and Power Line!

Of course, they do get a heck of a lot more hits than I; but perhaps it's not entirely due to their no-comments policy....
